Police in Lira have arrested a 39-year-old man in possession of an illegal firearm.
Moris Okwir, a resident of Starch Factory, Adyel Division in Lira Municipality was arrested on Sunday by the North Kyoga Region Flying Squad after an informant tipped the Police with intelligence information that the suspect was in possession of an illegal Firearm, David Ongom Mudong, the North Kioga police spokesperson reveals.
According to Mudong, the suspect who at first denied being in possession of the firearm later on admitted after an interrogation at Central Police Station- Lira.
“The suspect admitted and directed the police to where he was hiding the firearm and a 9MM Pistol model; BLOW P99 A CALL with serial NO. 8-002377 and 4 rounds of live ammunition were recovered.” Mudong said in a Monday statement.
Okwir claims he is a registered nurse working as a country programs Director for an organization called John Dau Foundation based in South Sudan.
“He further revealed that he bought the riffle for his personal security from an open market in Juba from an individual he cannot remember his personality. The suspect has been charged with illegal possession of firearms vide CRB 12/33/2018 as police inquiries continue.”– Mudong added in a statement today.
Mudong concluded that firearms are only by law required to be in possession by the security agencies however those who wish to acquire firearms should follow the right procedures as required by law within the firearms Act.
