At least thirty four(34) people are currently being held by police in Lira for associating themselves with one of suspected thieves who were lynched by a mob in Kichope, Lira Municipality on Friday.
Residents of Kichope last week lynched four suspected thieves after they allegedly broke into a saloon.
David Ongom Mudong, the North Kioga police spokesperson told journalists at Lira Central Police station on Monday that the 34 suspects were picked on Sunday evening after attending the burial of one of the lynched suspects who was laid to rest in Omoro, Alebtong district.
Police rounded the mourners as they returned from the burial at Bal-Pe, a few kilometres from Lira town.
Mudong says the suspects face compounding felony charges. He says the deceased was a known criminal who was wanted by the police before he got lynched by mob in Kichope. He says the 34 mourners knew that their departed friend was a criminal but they failed to report him to the police.
He concluded that the suspects: 22 men and 12 women will be screened before releasing them. He says police will investigate their relationship with the slain suspect.
