Police in Lira on Tuesday evening fired teargas to disperse a crowd that had gathered at Lira mayor’s garden to listen to former FDC presidential candidate Rtd Col Dr.Kizza Besigye.
Besigye who was in the company of FDC presidential candidate Patrick Amuriat Oboi and Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobiwine was set to address the crowd Tuesday evening.
FDC leaders who include John Baptist Okello Okello, the party’s Vice chairman Northern Uganda, and Otyama Gongson who heads Lira district and Brian Ogutu from Oyam claimed that they got clearance from the police in Lira to host Besigye at Lira Mayor’s garden.
Besigye was expected to talk tough on the current controversial age limit bill that has sharply divided the country.
At about 3pm, the locals begun turning up at the mayors garden in expectation of Dr.Kizza Besigye but the field force unit of the police from Lira central police station sealed off the ground and asked the crowd to leave.
Our reporter who was at the scene says a police officer with a name tag on his uniform marked as Okoda came and announced to the crowd that they had received orders from the police headquarters in Kampala asking them to block the rally.
The crowd however turned rowdy and police was forced to fire tear gas in the air .People scampered for their lives and some were followed by police up to the Lira Main market where several teargas canisters were also fired.
The Forum for Democratic change party is yet to make a statement.
