Lira District Deputy Internal Security Officer-DISO Henry Baluku, Amac sub county LCIII chairperson Bernard Adoko along with 8 others were on Friday remanded by a court sitting in Lira for allegedly stealing government drugs meant for public health facilities.
Baluku, Adoko and another person identified as Okello James face the charges of compounding felony and neglect to prevent felony.
Meanwhile Aceng Gloria,, Ojuka Moses , Eric Okullo, Onedo Ben, Julius Etok and Others Lango James, Amucu Agness most of whom are staff at Amai Hospital and Amac health centre IV all face charges of theft and unlawful possession of government drugs.
They are accused of stealing government drugs including malarial drugs: Coartem and Lumartem , Hepatitis B vaccines, malaria testing kits, and antiretroviral drugs-ARVs.
The ten suspects were arrested in an operation conducted by
State House Health Monitoring unit headed by Collins Karugaba in Lango districts of Lira, Apac, Dokolo and Amolatar, following a tip off by a resident who informed the Lira District Resident Commissioner Robert Abak of the illegal acts of local leaders of conniving with health workers to sell government drugs earlier in the week. Karugaba said drugs worth more than UGX 50 million were recovered from the suspects.
On Friday, Grade One Magistrate, Simon Peter Odoo read charges the suspects will be charged with and remanded them to Lira prison until Monday 7th August, 2017 when they will re-appear in court for the mention of their cases.
