Four days on and the hope of finding the truck that plunged into the Nile river at Karuma bridge with the three people it was carrying is fast fading.
According authorities, a white Tata Lorry with registration number UAW356C transporting dry cassava from Pakwach to Hoima rammed into the Karuma bridge rails on Friday evening at around 7pm, plunging into the fast flowing river.
Aswa region police commander Bosco Otim said the truck owner, Salim Umar who is from Soroti helped police to identify the victims. They are; Faruku Arafat (driver), Karibu Baraza(turnman) and Ibrahim Abonyang- owner of the produce that was being transported.
Efforts to recover the bodies of the victims and the truck by the UPDF, Police, locals and divers haven’t yet come into fruition. The search has been hampered by the fast flowing waters and rocks.
The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) attributes the cause of the accident to the poor mechanical condition of the truck and over speeding.
